In September 2021, for the first time, the Commandant Charcot, a polar exploration icebreaker built by the French company Ponant, embarked on an attempt to reach the geographic North Pole.
SEDNA contributed its expertise in polar expedition management to guarantee the safety of operations and ensure the training of expedition teams. We drew on our know-how in recognizing dangerous ice zones, as well as our expertise in polar bear behavior and the associated safety rules.
On September 11, 2021, during this expedition, we proudly enabled Ole Eliassen and Adam Eskildsen, two hunters from the small village of Kullorsuaq and SEDNA guides, to become the first Greenlanders to reach the geographic North Pole.
Once we reached the geographic North Pole, we seized the opportunity to organize an evacuation exercise in collaboration with the Search and Rescue teams. The aim was to test, in real-life conditions, the survival equipment and evacuation protocols we had developed for the icebreaker. To do this, we simulated an evacuation of the ship on pack ice, with a 24-hour simulation.
